Howden UK Celebrate Five Years of Health and Safety Excellence

The construction and maintenance division of Howden UK mark a record five years since their last Lost Time Incident and their fifth 5 star award from the British Safety Council. While the year may be nearly over, 2012 has been a highly successful one for the construction and maintenance division of Howden UK, which marked five years since their last Lost Time Incident (LTI). 2012 also marks the fifth consecutive year that Howden UK construction and maintenance division has been awarded the British Safety Council’s 5 Star Award for Health and Safety Management and working to best practise.

Nigel Francis, General Manager, Howden UK, Construction & Maintenance Division comments: “We believe that undertaking British Safety Council 5 Star Award for Health and Safety Management and working to Best Practice audit has raised the awareness of health and safety practices in our management team and our site personnel, resulting in a greater commitment to safe working practices in the workplace.”

Howden UK’s recent award from the British Safety Council, which was awarded following a three day audit carried out at their Kingswinford office and at West Burton Power Station, also marks another cause for celebration for the company. This is because this 5 star award, which is highly sought after in the industry, and which they were first awarded in September 2007, also gives them the opportunity to finally apply for the council’s most prestigious award.

Nigel Francis continues: “By achieving a 5 Star rating, Howden UK has qualified for the right to apply for the British Safety Council‘s prestigious Sword of Honour Award. Howden UK has been successful in being awarded the Sword three years out of four and we will be applying again this year. There are only 40 swords presented to companies worldwide each year. To achieve the Sword of Honour award, an in-depth portfolio has to be compiled, detailing the organisation’s Management Procedures with regard to Health & Safety, their commitment, initiatives and involvement of the workforce. The submission is externally reviewed and scored against Best Practice worldwide.”

Fix 8 Recognise That Whilst A Bad Workman Always Blames His Tools, Having The Right Power Tools To Hand Will Help Get Things Off To A Much Better Start

Maybe you are a home user getting ready to tackle a Do It Yourself (DIY) task or maybe you are a professional taking on a new job, but in either case you probably recognise the importance of having the right tools for the job. Fix 8 also recognise that whilst a bad workman always blames his tools, having the right power tools to hand will help get things off to a much better start.

Indeed Fix 8 pride themselves on their ability to supply both the amateur DIY person and the professional tradesman with high quality power tools at prices to suit all budgets. As an example you may just need a lightweight cordless screwdriver for very occasional use around the house, in which case Fix 8 would recommend a small 3.6v model. However, they also supply a wide range of heavy duty cordless screwdrivers and drills in a wide range of voltages from 10.8V to 36V, including the common sizes of 7.2,9.6 and 14.4V, as well as truly industrious high power 24 and 36V models. Fix 8 advise that the latter are ideal for professionals and are ideal for continual heavy use including drilling in to concrete.

When it comes to working with wood then they supply a complete range of electric planers, routers and sanders to cover all of your woodworking needs. Indeed they specialize in the Makita range of sanders, which have been chosen by Fix 8 for their ease of use, durability and value for money. They offer a full range of Makita sanders from high-powered angle sanders, orbital sanders, belt sanders, filing sanders, palm sanders through to multi-purpose sanders.

Fix 8 also have a wide range of power tools designed for working with harder materials such as concrete, ranging from heavy duty hammer drills capable of using extra long drill bits through to stone cutters.

All of Fix 8’s power tool range can be found on their website, where pictures, and full descriptions of all of their power tools can be easily accessed and ordered online. Best of all if you spend more than £50, next day delivery is free, and as Fix 8 recognises that your time is money, you can even have your new power tools delivered directly to the site you are working on, saving you time by letting you get on with work and not having to wait at home for a delivery.

On their new website Fix 8 also offer a wide range of accessories for all of their power tools, from spares batteries to dust extraction units and Bosch jigsaw blades, making them a one stop shop when it comes to power tools.

Once you have checked out their latest range of power tools online you may want to order some of the extensive range of fixings and fasteners that they sell, in order to complete your job, all of which are also available with next day delivery. Fix 8 also offer a comprehensive range of support online as well as having highly knowledgeable staff that can handle all of your telephone enquiries.

Fix8 Total Construction Supply

When it comes to looking for a one stop shop for meeting all of your construction supply needs, then Fix 8 look to have things covered. They have recognised that whilst many people want to shop around for value for money, that the same busy people do not also want to waste time, which would be better spent working, rather than driving around four or five different shops in order to save the very last penny. Given the cost of fuel on top of this then finding one supplier such as Fix 8 that can fulfil all of your construction needs can be a great time and money saver.

Firstly they carry a huge range of fasteners and fixings online from simple screws through to frame fixings and even heavyweight concrete anchors, all of which can be ordered for next day delivery if ordered before 4pm. They also have a dedicated section on their website detailing technical dimensions and specifications of all of the fasteners and fixings that they sell, taking the guesswork out of choosing the right product for the job. This is backed up by company staff that have an outstanding knowledge of fasteners and fixings, and they can provide realistic, practical advice on which products you need to use, and they are all just a phone call away.

Secondly they carry a wide range of professional grade power tools and accessories, also with guaranteed next day delivery. This is because Fix 8 know that when your old drill packs up, or your existing cordless drill battery dies, that you need to be back up and running as soon as possible. It is also the reason why every range of power tools sold by them has been chosen not just to offer you the best price, but also a power tool that is going to last you a long time. Whilst other suppliers maybe happy to sell you a brand new angle grinder every year, Fix 8 would far rather they sell you the right one just the once, rather than the wrong one several times over.

Fix 8 are dedicated to providing you with the best customer service possible, and to their mind good customer service is supplying you with a power tool that lasts for years, not months; along with supplying a vast range of industry products at trade prices.

They also carry an extensive range of general construction products such as fillers, sealants, adhesive and paints as an example. In addition to this they also have an extensive range of hand tools such as general building tools, through to more specialist plumbing tools.

One look at their website and you will see that if you are in the construction industry then there are very few jobs that you will undertake whereby Fix 8 cannot supply everything you need from start to finish, from the power drill you need to make a hole, to the frame fixing you then put in the hole, through to the paint you end up using to paint the frame with. Lastly when it comes to keeping you safe whilst doing every stage of the task in hand then Fix 8 also have an extensive range of safety and personal protection products from protective eye wear, to safety gloves and boots to offer you total protection.

Fix8 Ltd offer a large variety of fixings and fasteners at trade prices, including Machine Screws, Bosch Jigsaw Blades, Self Tapping Screws, Frame Fixings and much more!

Ace Sheds Promotes The Wooden Summer House

Ace Sheds have a fantastic range of timber products which range from sheds to timber workrooms and wooden summerhouses and at first it seems strange that this is the time of the year to promote the summer house but there is more than a little logic to the argument. The summerhouse is often put to bed in winter the family does not get the time to use it because they are working and going to school and when they return the nights are cold and dark but in many cases the opposite is true.

The retired family or the wife or husband with time on their hands when the children are at school can find the summerhouse a superb place to spend some time in the autumn, winter and spring. The wooden summer house is in essence an extra communal space fitted into the glorious surroundings of a garden, the best views and the quietest room and an escape from the hustle and bustle of the house. Once a timber summerhouse is used through the winter it will be surprising how quickly the working members of the family migrate to it at the weekend.

Ace can supply wooden summer houses from a large range and at a large number of different dimensions to fit almost every requirement of the user. Over the years the vast experience Ace Sheds have gained has been put to use in finding a building that will satisfy virtually every desire. The summer houses can be fitted out to meet the user’s requirement’s, the introduction of power will enable lights and power points to be fitted. This enables the kettle to be boiled and the television or radio to be used with the proper furniture the summerhouse becomes great retreat. It also allows a heater to be installed.

The autumn is a great time to put in a summerhouse as the weather is quite good and there is less to do in the garden so time restrictions are less, the grass does not need much attention and the flowers are going to sleep. ACE Sheds have some excellent designs available from corner units that can fit into a small garden to large airy timber workshops that can act as a decent workplace in the garden. ACE Sheds are particularly proud of the Bournemouth and Middlesex ranges as they supply an excellent summerhouse at a very reasonable cost.

The Bournemouth summerhouse for example is a lovely room with the whole of the front of the building fitted with small square windows from floor to ceiling including the double door entrance. The windows also go round each side to give a 270 degree view of the garden, house or the surrounding area.

The Middlesex range is ACE Sheds best-selling range and it is easy to see why that is the case. This is a great pitched roof design with lovely Georgian windows providing a good airy aspect and which will be a great addition to any garden. The design is excellent and value for money cannot be beaten. ACE Sheds are just a click or a call away and will answer any question available and a Christmas drink in the winter’s sun can become a reality.

Tool-NET Sales Heat Up This Spring

Online tool superstore Tool-NET has reported that the unusually warm spring weather caused a spike in product purchases from their range of DIY tools. With an unseasonably hot March, Tool-NET has experienced significant growth in sales of gardening and DIY tools and accessories. This is largely thanks to UK householders shaking off their winter inertia and starting projects in the home and garden.

The hot March weather appears to have encouraged a lot of fair-weather spending. The British Retail Consortium claim retail sales across the board were up year-on-year by 1.3% in March, with clothes, barbecue foods and gardening goods as the most popular products. Online retailers saw rises of 13.9%, and Tool-NET saw an even stronger sales rise.

Tool-Net has developed a strong customer base among trade tool purchasers, DIY fanatics and casual purchasers of tools for the home and garden. Offering a no-nonsense returns policy and dispatch times where 98% of orders are sent out the day they are received, Tool-NET also offers strong savings with discounts of up to 70% off list prices. These are available on a wide range of more than 6500 power tools, gardening accessories, fixings, fastenings, hand tools, ancillaries and consumables.

Another factor which has helped Tool-NET sales heat up this spring is an ever-growing catalogue. With new lines being added daily it has never been easier for customers to find the right tool at the right price.

Among the new gardening lines which are proving popular is the innovative cordless gardening multi-tool from CEL-UK. The PS1 Powerstick dispenses with the hassle and trip hazard of a cord while adding an unrivalled versatility which allows it to convert effortlessly from a grass trimmer to a hedge trimmer to a garden rake and broom.

More traditional brands continue to fare well in the fair weather, too. Black & Decker’s reputation for performance and reliability at an attractive price has been continued in its latest range of gardening tools, including chainsaws, hedge trimmers, line trimmers, blower/vacs and lawn mowers.

With its ever-expanding catalogue, competitive pricing and fast dispatch times Tool-NET is continuing to help fuel the UK’s spring clean of gardens and homes.

Tool-NET Advises Homeowners To Get Ready For Summer Now

Leading online garden and power tool retailer Tool-NET.co.uk today urged homeowners that in the run-up to spring now is the best time to get those outside spaces ready for summer.

Tool-NET has highlighted five jobs that should be an essential part of summer preparations this spring:

Clean gutters may not be the first thing commented on by summer guests, but nonetheless, spring is the best time to get those gutters clear of the leaves, twigs, and debris left in winter’s wake. Failing to do this can lead to clogged water being driven under the eaves of the house and ultimately into its walls.

Decking that has been scrubbed down and protected with decking oil will not only look a lot better and help frame your outdoor space, it will also last a lot longer.

Sorting your shed out will make storing gardening equipment, along with barbecues and chairs, so much easier. First, throw away or recycle what you do not need. Next organise what is left into groups and then store it in boxes, on shelves or on hooks. Try to keep things off the floor to maximise your space.

Now you can turn your attention to the garden. Rake your lawn to remove dead growth, stray leaves and twigs. This will give the soil the light and air it needs to support grass growth. If you spot bare or damaged patches of lawn, spring is a great time to reseed them before the garden gets heavy use in the summer.

Finally, weed your beds before unwanted plants become established. Now is the time to move any shrubs you wish to relocate so they can establish themselves in their new location. Use an organic dormant oil spray to remove pests who have overwintered in your fruit trees, magnolias, crab apples and shrubs.

Tool-NET is currently offering discounts of up to 70% off the list price of gardening tools and other power and hand tools so that, whatever tool you need for your garden, it needn’t cost the earth.

DIY Becomes More Popular

Continued economic difficulties have placed severe constraints on the budget of the average UK family. Today, most families look for ways to reduce their monthly expenses.

In addition to cutting out luxuries – such as satellite TV and high speed internet connection – many families are also looking for ways to reduce the cost of maintaining their homes. Homeowners can no longer afford the inflated charges levied by tradesmen. They have therefore resorted to DIY methods in order to repair small problems around their homes.

Until now, people have been hesitant to resort to DIY methods because they were regarded as too difficult. The current economic climate has left many families with no choice but to try their hand at DIY.

The internet, YouTube in particular, has become a popular reference guide for people interested in DIY. It is has become easy to find step-by-step instructions on how to repair almost any problem in the home.

The technological advancement of tools has also made it easier for the average person to build or repair household items. Older power tools were difficult to control, but this has changed. Today’s tools have versatile, user-friendly designs, suitable for any amateur.

In addition, DIY has also become easier because of multipurpose tools, which can complete a host of tasks. A modern Bosch power tool can often fulfil a variety of functions, making it unnecessary to invest in many new tools. The development of tool technology has resulted in affordable tools, which enable more people to attempt DIY projects.

DIY has become popular because it is easier and more affordable than it has ever been. Technological advancements and the internet have combined to make it possible for any person to complete a DIY project. Today, you no longer need to pay the exorbitant fees charged by a tradesman, because you have the option to do it yourself.

Tool-Net Urges Power Tool Users To Be Safe

Nearly every home in the country has an electric drill but today the power tool experts, Tool-Net, suggested that very few users are aware of basic safety precautions that should always be taken when using their drill. Those who do not follow these precautions run the risk of having an accident that could hurt them or damage their drill.

Tool-Net highlighted the risk that loose clothing, jewellery or long untied back hair can pose. Any of these can easily be snagged in the drill as it rotates. Whilst these should be avoided safety goggles should be worn as these help prevent damage to your eyes caused by filings or shavings that are created by drilling. Whilst the heat of a drill bit can burn hands those who choose to wear gloves should make sure they are tight fitting.

The main area of risk when drilling is that caused by the drill slipping. Tool-Net outlined five simple steps that will greatly reduce this risk. First is to use a centre punch to start your drilling and to apply even pressure throughout. Second is to secure the material you are drilling in a vice. Third is to use a drill frame if you are drilling harder materials such as metal. Fourth is to make a pilot hole if you are drilling a screw into wood. The fifth rule is to always double check that the drill bit you have selected is sitting correctly and is held tightly by the chuck.

Both corded and cordless drills have specific rules that Tool-Net urged users to follows. A common way that corded drills are damaged is through careless treatment of the electrical cord which can be damaged if strained through being tripped over, used to pull a plug out of a socket or used to carry the drill itself. Cordless drills can easily be damaged if the incorrect charger is used to charge the drill or if it is charged in temperatures beyond those recommended by the manufacturer.

A Tool-Net spokesperson commented that “drills are an essential power tool and following these simple rules will help users avoid the risk of accident, injury or damage to their drill”.

Aggreko Builds Reputation For Construction Solutions

Aggreko, the global leader in temporary power and temperature control solutions, provided a temporary heating and dehumidification package to main contractors FCC Elliott Construction to assist in the construction programme of the new 312 bed South West Acute Hospital at Enniskillen in Northern Ireland.

Aggreko initially supplied six 125 kW IDF heaters and 12 1600 KT dehumidifier packages to dry and heat the clinical and ward blocks of the new hospital – to 6C – to enable painting of the interiors. Moisture and temperature control equipment was also supplied in basement corridors to protect electrical equipment and busbars from moisture.

The temporary dehumidifiers were deployed on site in sequence to remove excess moisture from each block of the hospital. Flexible ducting took hot air from the temporary heaters to each floor, and polyducting was suspended from corridor ceilings to distribute air throughout each floor area.

Howard Sharp, Construction Director at FCC Elliott Construction, said: “Aggreko provided an effective temporary moisture and temperature control solution which is assisting us to continue to deliver this high quality healthcare facility on time and on budget. Their technical expertise and professional, high standard of service throughout the project has been invaluable on such a large, high profile scheme.”

Martin Byrne, sales manager at Aggreko, said: “It is vital that construction programmes run according to schedule, particularly on major developments, as delays can have a huge impact on project costs. Our temporary dehumidification and temperature control equipment, which is available for hire ensures the correct conditions for electrical installations and internal finishes such as paint and floor coverings, assisting contractors to deliver projects to meet their clients’ requirements.”

Call Centre Dials In Aggreko Rental Power

Aggreko, the world leader in the provision of temporary power and temperature control services, proved the reliability of rental power when a customer’s own back-up generator failed and an alternative power supply was required urgently.

Good Fellas’ national call centre in Port Elizabeth relies heavily on consistent and reliable power to run its advanced telecommunications and IT equipment, which is in operation 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The company’s standby power plant failed during a weekly test and parts needed to repair the generator were not readily available.

Without standby power in place, the call centre was wholly reliant on power from the national grid, which had experienced power cuts in recent times. Being without a back-up power supply meant the risk of serious financial losses, so the management of Good Fellas looked for an alternative solution.

Aggreko was contracted to provide a standby generator of 60 kVA, which was installed on site immediately. Aggreko’s wide range of generators, from 10 kW up to 1250 kVA, means that customers are able to hire the exact amount of power required whenever necessary.

Jonathan Bishop, Chief Executive, Good Fellas, said: “The power package Aggreko installed was so reliable that we took the decision to continue renting from them for the long-term. The team provides fantastic support and regularly tests and maintains the equipment, ensuring we have complete peace of mind.”

Martin Foster, Country Manager, Aggreko South Africa, commented: “The upkeep and maintenance of power equipment, such as generator rental can become expensive and inconvenient for a company when power is not its core business. Aggreko takes over that responsibility, leaving our customers to get on with their day job. We look forward to growing our relationship with Good Fellas in the future.”

Businesses generate approximately one quarter of all waste in England, according to the Department of Farming and Rural Affairs. To help reduce this figure, Tool-NET has introduced a company-wide environmental policy that targets any inefficient use of resources.

A spokesman from the company said that it is “committed to treating the environment with consideration and respect, particularly in the way it affects our staff, our customers and the local communities in which we operate.”

The most sustainable of waste management techniques is to avoid the creation of waste in the first place. With this in mind, the company does not to buy in materials for packaging its products ready for shipping, choosing instead to re-use materials from deliveries made to it.

Staff are encouraged to re-use paper whenever possible. Used paper is saved and collected by contractors for recycling, as is a variety of other unavoidable waste. Waste bins are collected for controlled disposal as required by the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

The company invites its customers to return old batteries. These are then sent out to its manufacturing suppliers for safe and environmentally friendly disposal. Tool-NET has a policy to minimize the disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment as unsorted municipal waste and to achieve a high collection of WEE for treatment, recovery and environmentally sound disposal.

Japanese Disaster Sparks UK Nuclear Fears

The controversial debate concerning the UK’s dependence on nuclear power has been reignited. In the aftermath of Fukushima, many UK citizens have grown doubtful of the safety of nuclear power.

Certain branches of the public have called for a re-evaluation of the UK’s safety measures in the event of a nuclear disaster. Some people are even beginning to take matters into their own hands by investing in nuclear bunkers. Online companies, like Tool-net, have noted an increase in the number of portable generators sold as people prepare for potential power cuts.

Some experts claim that the concerns are unwarranted, because the United Kingdom is not susceptible to severe earthquakes. The worst earthquake ever recorded in UK history only measured 5.75 on the Richter scale. This is comparatively mild when placed next to the 9.0 rating afforded to Japan’s disaster in March.

Approximately 15% of the United Kingdom’s electricity is supplied by 19 nuclear reactors in various locations. Nuclear meltdown at any of these reactors would leave thousands of UK citizens without electricity. This fear, when coupled with risk of radiation poisoning, has left many wondering whether the UK’s reliance on nuclear power is a good idea.

UK nuclear history has been marred by three accidents. In 2005, 20 tonnes of Uranium leaked from a cracked pipe at the Thorp nuclear processing plant. Although no radiation reached the environment, the British Nuclear Group was fined £500 000 for a breach of safety regulations.

This recent case illustrated that design errors pose as great a risk as natural disasters. Even if the UK is safe from devastating earthquakes, there is no guarantee that plants have been designed perfectly.

Many members of the public refuse to remain complacent and have chosen to protect themselves from the danger of nuclear fallout. Small portable generators, like the Clarke IG1000, can already be found in nuclear bunkers throughout Europe. The Cold War may have ended, but the fear of radiation remains as real as ever.

Tool-NET Issues Essential Safety Tips For All Power Tool Users

Tool-NET, a leading online power tool superstore, has issued some simple safety tips that are applicable for all electrical power tool users, regardless of the country in which they are using their tools. Tool-NET’s superstore (www.tool-net.co.uk) stocks more than 6,500 power tools, gardening accessories, fixings, fastenings, ancillaries and consumables. It has customers in more than 50 countries across five continents. The essential safety tips, however, are universal for all countries and all tools.

A spokesperson commented: “When using any electric tool, there are some simple safety steps you can take that can greatly reduce any possible risks. Whether you are using a jump start kit, a drill or a Clarke FG2000 generator, by taking a few simple precautions and making some quick checks, you can stop potential accidents and get your project completed safely.”

Firstly, Tool-NET advised exercising particular caution if working near liquids or in damp conditions. This includes thinking carefully about where you store your tools. They should not be stored anywhere that is damp. Electricity and moisture can be a dangerous mix, so jobs such as washing down walls should be prepared for carefully. Electrical tools should be removed from the room and electrical sockets covered. If water is spilt over an electrical appliance, it should not be used until it has completely dried out.

Secondly, Tool-NET advised that devices such as power breakers can help prevent a tool malfunction leading to a dangerous accident. By stopping the power supply automatically, these devices make power tool use safer in all conditions, but are strongly advised if working outdoors or in damp conditions indoors.

The third essential electrical safety tip that Tool-NET offered concerns care of your tool’s electrical cord. This should be regularly checked for damage, and the tool should not be used if any is apparent. Knots in cords should be untangled immediately, because they can lead to an excessive build-up of heat and present a potential fire risk. To avoid damaging the cord, you should never carry a power tool by the cord or yank it to remove its plug from a socket. The cord’s position should be noted, as it can be a trip hazard, but also because it must not lie near sources of heat, oil or any sharp edges that could cut it (including the cutting surface of your power saw or your drill, for example).

Finally, Tool-NET advised that a power tool should always be unplugged when not in use. This will avoid any possibility of the tool being started accidentally. When servicing or changing the accessories for your power tool, always make sure first that the tool is not plugged in.

Tool-NET suggested that these simple safety tips are applicable across all electrical tools, wherever they are used and whoever is using them. Tool-NET’s spokesperson concluded: “DIY enthusiasts and professionals all use electric tools to get jobs done. Our safety tips will help them get them done safely.”
